End-of-Year Reflections: 3 Simple Ways to Boost Staff Morale

As the school year draws to a close, many of us are reflecting on just how much we've had to navigate. Staff changes, evolving curricula, shifting pupil behaviour, fluctuating attendance — the pressures on school life have been relentless.

Even if you're in a leadership role, it can often feel like many of these challenges are beyond your control. But before the summer break arrives, there’s still time to make a positive difference — however small — in your school community.

At GTG Educate, we believe relationships are at the heart of every great school. So here are three small, human gestures you can try in the final weeks of term. They cost little but can leave a lasting impact on the people you work with — and help end the year on a note of compassion, connection, and hope.

1. Speak to one colleague who seems withdrawn or low.

It may not be the most uplifting conversation you have this week. It might even feel awkward or difficult. But for that colleague, your kindness and interest could mean a great deal. People remember when someone takes the time to notice them.

2. Ask two people for their opinion.

They might be NQTs, support staff, admin, or a colleague you don’t usually consult. You may or may not use their suggestions — that’s not the point. The act of asking shows that their voice matters. It fosters respect, value, and a sense of shared purpose.

3. Invite three members of staff to lunch — outside your usual circle.

Break the pattern. Invite someone from the cleaning team, a lunchtime supervisor, a teaching assistant. Provide a light lunch, sit down together, and talk about anything and everything. These moments of informal connection often lead to the most honest insights. Try it weekly with a new trio — you might be surprised by what you learn.

People remember when you take an interest.
And in schools, those moments of connection ripple outwards — building trust, morale, and a culture of care.

We hope these small actions help you finish the year well.
